TRevPAB Calculator

Total Revenue Per Available Bed, the version that counts the bar tab, the tour desk, and the laundry tokens, not just the beds. Enter your numbers below.

Formula

TRevPAB = Total Hostel Revenue (Beds + Extras) ÷ Total Available Beds
$

What the beds alone brought in

$

Everything that isn't a bed: bar, tours, laundry, lockers, merch

Total sellable bed capacity for the period

Total Revenue$0.00
TRevPAB$0.00

Tip: Run this next to your RevPAB. The wider the gap between the two, the more your bar, tours, and other extras are actually contributing, if they're nearly identical, almost all your revenue is coming from beds alone.

RevPAB versus TRevPAB, and why the gap matters

RevPAB only counts the beds. TRevPAB counts everything, the bar, the walking tours, the pub crawl commission, the breakfast add-ons, the laundry, the lockers, the airport pickup. You take your full revenue for a period, including all of that, and divide by your available beds. The reason it's worth calculating separately is that two hostels can look identical on bed revenue and be in completely different financial shape once the extras are in the picture.

Bed revenue isn't the whole business

Plenty of hostels make a meaningful slice of their money after the guest has booked the bed. A busy bar, a tour desk that actually sells, a café with decent margins, in a property that runs those well, the non-bed revenue stops being pocket change and starts being a real second income stream. RevPAB simply can't see any of it, which means for those hostels RevPAB understates how the place is actually doing.

TRevPAB is the number that captures the whole guest, not just the bed they slept in. If you've invested in extras and want to know whether that investment is showing up in the results, this is the metric that answers the question, RevPAB never will.

The gap between the two is the insight

Calculate RevPAB and TRevPAB side by side and the distance between them tells you how hard your ancillary side is working. A TRevPAB that sits well above your RevPAB means the extras are pulling real weight. A TRevPAB that's barely above RevPAB means almost everything you make comes from beds, which is fine if that's the model, but worth knowing if you thought the bar was carrying its share.

That gap is also a fair way to compare yourself against another property or against your own past. Two hostels with matching occupancy and matching bed rates can post very different TRevPAB, and the difference is entirely down to how much guests spend once they're through the door.

Using it to set targets

Because TRevPAB rolls everything into one per-bed figure, it's a clean target to hand to the people running the extras. A bar manager or activities lead can't do much with "sell more," but "here's our TRevPAB and here's where we'd like it" gives them a number that ties their work back to the whole property's performance.

On the operations side, the usual levers are the obvious ones done consistently: train the front desk to mention tours and add-ons at check-in rather than hoping guests find them, surface upsells at the right moment, and partner with local operators for commission you don't have to staff for. The calculator is where you check whether any of it is actually moving the number.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Total Revenue Per Available Bed. It's the hostel cousin of TRevPAR in the hotel world, reworked for bed-based inventory, total revenue, including everything beyond beds, divided by your available beds.

  • Anything a guest spends that isn't the bed itself: bar and café sales, tours and activities, laundry, left-luggage, lockers, merchandise, travel SIMs, airport transfers. If it lands in your till and it isn't the booking, it belongs in the extras line.

  • RevPAB counts bed revenue only. TRevPAB adds every other dollar guests spend on top. If your hostel runs an active bar or tour desk, TRevPAB will read noticeably higher, and more accurately reflect what the property actually earns per bed.

  • Grow the non-bed side and make sure guests know it exists. Mention tours and extras at check-in, run any food and drink offer at a sensible margin, and set up commission deals with local operators. Then re-run this calculator to confirm the extra effort is actually showing up per bed.
